 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lenakinta'nija'peres," 16, 1971-March 31 1995), also known as Selena, is an American Tejano performer. Her contributions to music and fashion have made her the "Queen" of Tejano music. She was among the most prominent Mexican-American entertainers of the 20th century. In 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third position in their ranking of "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums as well as the Latin charts of songs. With regards to her style of dress media outlets have dubbed her the Tejano Madonna. Her fashion choices makes her one of the most important Latin artists. Quintanilla, Suzette Quintanilla. Her reputation was frequently discredited in the 1980s and refused performances at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, a predominantly male-dominated genre. After winning the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she began to gain the attention of her peers. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and released her debut album, self-titled the following year. In the meantime, her brother became her main music producer as well as songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) which reached top of the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. It was described by music critics as the "breakthrough" album of her musical career. One of the songs, "Como la Flor" was a smash and was her most-loved tune. Live! (1993) won Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano artist to do so. In 1994 she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the most popular Latin albums in the United States. It was critically acclaimed as being the reason behind Tejano music's first period of commercialization since it was one of the most popular Latin music subgenres at the time.
